The Power and Allure of Beliefs

What are beliefs other than annoying, confusing or weird nebulous “things” you want to get rid of, conquer or destroy?

I often think it’s hard to change things if you don’t know what those things are. Right?

Here’s a brief intro as to what beliefs actually are. I don’t promise any of this is true, but it does prove to be very helpful if there are limiting beliefs you want to change.

Beliefs are how we make sense of, and experience the world.

Beliefs:

• were decisions made (a very long time ago) about yourself and the world based on what you were experiencing, then
• beliefs act as guardrails for the brain and one’s identity – they provide structure to life and a sense of safety
• beliefs, conscious and/or unconscious, limit our expression, our true nature and purpose in the world
• outdated beliefs limit choice
• beliefs are extremely important, and should be worked with and revised with tremendous respect
• beliefs can’t be killed, destroyed or “let go of” – if only it was that easy.

Beliefs are extremely powerful and can act like magicians behind curtains orchestrating our lives, our choices, decisions and ultimately creating the future.

Beliefs, and the transformational work that can happen with them, is profound and some of the most helpful and interesting work that happens around here.

To start to understand what your beliefs are, here are a few questions you can consider:

1. What’s your current experience like or what’s not working?
2. Are there any repeating patterns or behaviors you’re noticing?
3. What might someone believe in order that have that experience (the one you don’t want to be having)?
4. What else might someone believe in order to have that experience (the one you don’t want to be having)?

Just these few questions can start to open up a world of possibility and positive change towards what you want.
